Project Christmas Tree

Projects from mini-itx.com have been gracing the pages of computer magazines for the past few months now (tip for magazine editors - mention the website and send us a copy!!), but Josh Blodwell at Custom PC in the UK has gone one step further and actually created and documented his own "Project Christmas Tree", powered by an EPIA 5000 motherboard.

Here's a picture of it in a state of undress - you'll need to buy their January 2004 issue to read the full article (or flip through it in the supermaket like we did). Has anyone else created a seasonal Mini-ITX project we wonder?...

Laser TVs Available On Christmas 2007

Australia got the chance to be presented with the next generation in high-definition home television - the Laser TV.

The company behind the new technology, Arasor, announced that the new high-definition Laser TVs will use laser beams to display images on the screen, instead of using a DLP (digital light processing) chip or an electron gun.

The new technology will offer a far richer color range compared to actual technologies. Current TV technologies are able to provide a color range of up to 30-35% of what the eye can see, but the laser technology is able to double that amount and deliver an astonishing color range of up 90%, thus offering a more “lifelike image”.

According to Arasor, Laser TV will be half the weight and half the cost of plasma and LCD TVs, will have 75% less power output, will be thinner and will show more then twice the range of colors that their rival technologies. Also, Arasor says that Laser TVs will come in various shapes, from some small enough to fit a mobile phone or a PDA and some being large enough to be installed in cinemas.

Laser TVs will have an approximate 50,000 hour life and will offer almost constant 100% power output from the laser throughout their entire life span.

For the time being, Laser TVs are not available in stores, the one that Arasor presented in Sydney being just a prototype. However, 8 consumer electronics firms have partnered with Arasor and commercial units are expected to be shipped by late 2007 or early 2008. The current prototype was built by Mitsubishi with Arasor’s optoelectronic chip and Novalux’s laser projection device inside.

Digital Christmas 2007: Women and Men Think Alike

Looks like we have less and less diversity when it comes to how we wish what we had - digitally!May be it's something to celebrate - this sameness. As you may have seen the press release from the Solutions Research Group today being picked up eagerly by Information Week and Engadget, digital lifestyle products are very much going to show up under the tree in December.

The top four choices among men and women were exactly the same - and in the same order of preference: Flat screen Hi Def TV, Laptop (Windows i.e. not Mac), Digital Camera and Desktop Computer (again Windows, not Mac). What I find interesting is that all the four devices have a social content to them - they are used for social sharing or communication of some form. As opposed to game devices like Sony PS3 (7th for men), X-Box (made the 9th spot for men) and Nintendo (10th for men and 8th for women). Apple did not figure in the top ten for men - Apple Laptop made a 9th place showing for women. And yes, women would love to see TiVo or another DVR under their tree (10th place).

For some reason, SRG went out of its way to say, almost as a footnote, that though none of Apple's individual offerings made an impressive showing, as an total product line, one in 6 people think of one Apple product or another and would therefore surely find favor with Santa. May be the $100 rebates to the early iPhone buyers will find their way to another Apple product.
